7yo boy weighing 115 kg dies of obesity, parents charged with murder
Damien O’Brien, 40, and his wife Jessica O’Brien, 41, of Flint, Michigan, were charged last week of second-degree murder, torture, and second-degree child abuse following the death of their son, Casper, last year.
According to Peopleprosecutors stated that Jessica called 911 on Nov. 4, 2025, to report that her son was struggling to breathe.
Emergency responders arrived at the family’s rented home to find the boy in critical condition. Weighing more than 115 kg (254 pounds), he was entirely unable to move. He was rushed to a local hospital but passed away several hours later.
An autopsy revealed that Casper died from dilated cardiomyopathy, with morbid obesity cited as a significant contributing factor.
Authorities allege the 7-year-old was completely bedridden and had never attended school. His diet reportedly consisted almost entirely of potato chips and other snack foods.

CBS News reported that the O’Briens were accused of severe neglect. The allegations include failing to provide proper nutrition, preventing their son from exercising, and failing to maintain a safe, sanitary living environment.
Prosecutors noted the parents failed to seek adequate medical care, despite having health insurance. According to ABC12Casper had reportedly been taken to a physician only once in his entire life.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the scene as “one of the most unbelievable” in his 22-year career as a prosecutor.
He told WNEM that the residence was severely cluttered, stating it was “packed with everything you can imagine.” The hoarding conditions made it difficult for police to enter freely, especially with paramedics already occupying much of the available space.
Inside the residence, officers also discovered a 5-year-old girl running around unclothed.
Leyton confirmed that neither child had previously been flagged by Child Protective Services or local authorities.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Damien and Jessica O’Brien both face potential life sentences under Michigan law.
