Read, Digital Desk : Following intense retaliatory attacks between the US and Iran, both countries have decided to halt military action against each other. The attacks over the past few days threatened to shatter a recently reached fragile ceasefire. Now, both countries are set to return to the negotiating table in Qatar on Tuesday to try to de-escalate tensions.
According to Axios, a senior US official has said that the US and Iran have agreed to halt attacks on each other. This agreement comes after the two countries have exchanged fresh retaliatory strikes over the past few days, which had pushed the fragile ceasefire between the two sides to the brink of complete collapse.
Hormuz dispute discussed in Doha
According to officials, a key technical dialogue between the two sides is scheduled for Tuesday in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The main agenda of this meeting is to resolve the ongoing dispute over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The discussion will primarily focus on differing interpretations of the ceasefire memorandum, particularly those provisions that govern the safe movement of commercial vessels through this waterway.
Iran accuses US of violating deal
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of violating the interim memorandum of understanding by trying to create an alternative shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking in Baghdad, Araghchi said that under Article 5 of the agreement, Iran has full responsibility for coordinating the movement of ships through the strait during the 60-day negotiation period. He said any ship passing without Tehran’s coordination would be in violation of the agreement.
Iran claims retaliation
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have destroyed eight US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait using ballistic missiles and drones.
According to Iranian state media, the attacks were carried out in direct response to recent airstrikes by the US on Iranian military facilities in Sirik and Qeshm.
