Neither buried, nor burnt… dead body not strangled even after 102 years! Who are those Russian leaders whose last rites have not been performed till date?
Russian Leader Vladimir Lenin: After death, the last rites of any person are performed within a few hours or maximum a few days. This is also the tradition of almost every culture and religion of the world. But there have been some leaders in history, whose dead body was preserved for future generations instead of being buried or cremated. Even today lakhs of people come from far and wide to see his mortal remains.
In recent days, discussions have been intense regarding the funeral of former Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Meanwhile, once again the name of that world leader is in the headlines, more than a century has passed since his death, but till date his last rites have not been performed. We are talking about Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union and the biggest face of the Russian Revolution, whose mortal remains are still preserved in a special mausoleum located in Red Square in Moscow.
Who was Vladimir Ilyich Lenin?
Vladimir Lenin was born on April 22, 1870 in Russia. He led the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, which ended the Russian monarchy. After this revolution, the Soviet Union (USSR) became the world’s first communist country. Lenin became the first leader of the Soviet Union and laid the foundation of a political system that was later adopted by many countries around the world.
What happened after his death?
Lenin died on January 21, 1924 at the age of 53. Initially, the government arranged for a private funeral, but millions of people wanted to see him for the last time. Because it was winter, the body was kept in storage for several days, and the crowd grew.
After this, the Soviet leadership of that time decided to preserve Lenin’s body forever. Initially, his body was kept in a temporary wooden memorial. Later, the magnificent Lenin Museum was built on Red Square, where his body still rests.
How has the body been preserved for 102 years?
Many people wonder how a human body can remain intact for more than a hundred years without getting damaged. The answer lies in modern science and constant care. Lenin’s body was not preserved only with formalin. Soviet scientists created a completely different technology. They removed blood and other fluids from the body and used a special chemical solution to preserve the body tissues for a long time.
A team of experts still takes care of Lenin’s body regularly. Every 18 months, their bodies are placed in a special chemical solution for several weeks. Through this process the moisture and elasticity of the skin is maintained. The temperature and humidity inside Lenin’s body are kept under strict control. Excessive heat or humidity can harm the body, hence the environment is constantly monitored using modern technology.
Parts of Lenin’s body were also repaired.
Over the years, some parts of Lenin’s body have also been repaired. According to experts, the body as it appears today includes parts preserved scientifically along with original tissues. Work is going on to maintain the structure of the face, hands and skin.
Is the entire body original?
This question is also often asked. Scientists believe that a large portion of Lenin’s body is original, but some tissue and external parts have been preserved or recreated over decades of care. Therefore, the body as it appears today is not exactly the same as it was in 1924, but is believed to be largely the original body.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many Russian leaders and religious organizations demanded that Lenin be cremated. This issue was raised several times during the time of Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the government has not taken any action yet. Moscow’s Red Square and Lenin Museum are among the most popular tourist destinations in Russia. Tourists from all over the world come to see Lenin’s preserved body.
