Puri Police Takes Major Cyber Action Ahead of Rath Yatra 2026, Removes Fake Hotel Booking Websites

Ahead of the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026, the Odisha Police have intensified their cyber security efforts to protect pilgrims from online fraud. In a major crackdown, the cyber wing has identified and taken down around 40 fake hotel booking websites and fraudulent email accounts that were allegedly being used to cheat devotees planning to visit Puri.

According to officials, cyber criminals had created fake websites that closely resembled genuine hotel booking portals. These fraudulent platforms offered attractive room rates, VIP services, and other travel facilities to lure unsuspecting tourists. Victims were asked to make advance online payments, only to discover upon arrival that no reservation had been made.

The cyber team has been carrying out round-the-clock monitoring of the internet, identifying suspicious websites, fake domains, and phishing email accounts targeting Rath Yatra visitors. Authorities said the operation is part of a wider effort to ensure a safe and hassle-free pilgrimage during one of India’s largest religious festivals.

Police have urged devotees to remain cautious while booking accommodation online. Travelers are advised to use only official hotel websites, recognized travel platforms, or trusted booking services. Officials also warned people against offers that appear unusually cheap or require full advance payment through UPI or bank transfers without proper verification.

Authorities have requested anyone who suspects online fraud or encounters a fake booking website to report it immediately through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or the official Cyber Crime portal. Prompt reporting, they said, can help prevent financial losses and enable faster action against fraudsters.

With lakhs of devotees expected to arrive in Puri for Rath Yatra 2026, Odisha Police have reiterated their commitment to strengthening cyber surveillance and ensuring that pilgrims can make travel and accommodation arrangements safely. The ongoing crackdown is expected to continue throughout the festival period as officials work to identify and disable more fraudulent websites and online scams.
