Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Pavitra Margherita will attend the funeral ceremony of late Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Khamenei’s funeral will take place on Saturday. For this, both the Indian representatives will leave for Iran on Friday (July 3).
MEA issued statement
The Ministry of External Affairs gave this information in an official statement. The ministry said that Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita will visit Iran on July 3, 2026. He will attend the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
The high-level representation at the event underlines the importance of civilizational ties and people-to-people ties between the two countries, providing a strong foundation for political and economic ties.

PM Modi was invited
Let us tell you, Iran had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the funeral ceremony, but PM Modi will not be able to go to Tehran due to his pre-scheduled international programs. PM Modi will be on a tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand next month. After this, the Indian government decided to send Minister of State for External Affairs Pavitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to Iran.
Congress will also send representatives
Apart from PM Modi, Iran had also invited party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera and Salman Khurshid on behalf of Congress. Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid will attend the funeral ceremony in Iran.

The funeral ritual will continue for three days
According to the program released by Iran, the funeral program of late Khamenei is going to start from July 4. This ritual will continue for three days. A special event will be organized in the holy city of Qom, located in southern Tehran. After this, he will be laid to rest on July 9 in the holy city of Mashhad in north-eastern Iran.
