FIFA World Cup: Ronaldo breaks Messi’s record, Portugal in round of 16

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in the knockout of the FIFA World Cup for the first time in his career. He scored a goal on a penalty kick in the round of 32 match against Croatia. With this, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score a goal in the knockout. He broke Lionel Messi’s record. Messi had set this record in this World Cup. Apart from Ronaldo, Goncalo Ramos scored a goal in the injury time of the second half, due to which Portugal made a comeback after trailing and defeated Croatia 2-1 to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

 

Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perisic’s goal from Josip Sanisic’s cross. Ronaldo scored a penalty kick in the 68th minute to give Portugal an equaliser. However, the real hero of Portugal’s victory was Ramos, who scored in the fourth minute of injury time when it looked like the match would go to extra time. Croatia leveled the score at 2-2 in the final moments but after video review, Mario Pasalic was declared offside and the goal was invalidated. After this, Croatia’s fans also created a ruckus.

Portugal will face Spain

Portugal will face Spain in the round of 16. Spain has made it to the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Australia 3-0. With the help of two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain won a match in the knockout round for the first time since becoming champions in 2010. Oyarzabal scored in the 36th and 89th minutes. Pedro Porro scored in the 66th minute as Spain produced their most impressive performance so far in the ongoing tournament. He maintained complete control of the ball and displayed a good example of his aggressive and artistic play.

 

Not a single goal has been scored against Spain in this World Cup yet. The Austrian team could not take even a single shot on goal. In this way, Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon was successful in achieving a clean sheet (not conceding any goals in the match) for the fourth consecutive match. Young striker Lamin Yamal may not have scored a goal but he impressed with his performance. Spain took 10 shots on goal, out of which 4 shots were saved by this 18 year old player.
