Uttarakhand Finalises Alignment for Proposed George Everest–Kempty Falls Ropeway in Mussoorie
The Uttarakhand government has finalized the alignment for the proposed ropeway from George Everest to Kempty Falls in Mussoorie. After receiving approval from the Housing Department, the proposal will be placed before the state cabinet for final approval. Once completed, the project will form part of an integrated network of three ropeways in Mussoorie.
The proposed ropeway will begin at George Everest and pass through Atal Udyan (Company Garden), Camel Back Road and Lal Tibba before reaching Kempty Falls. According to the government, the project is intended to modernize tourism infrastructure, connect major tourist destinations and make travel easier for visitors.
The government said the ropeway will link key tourist attractions across Mussoorie and provide a more convenient mode of travel for tourists. It also aims to expand tourism activity across different parts of the town.
Upon completion of the project, Mussoorie will have a network of three ropeways. The existing ropeway between Jhula Ghar and Gun Hill has been operating for several years and remains a major attraction for tourists.
In addition, the country’s longest passenger ropeway between Purkul in Dehradun and Mussoorie is currently under construction and is intended to provide an alternative transport link from the plains directly to the hill town.
The proposed third ropeway will connect major tourist destinations within Mussoorie, including George Everest, Lal Tibba, Camel Back Road, Atal Udyan and Kempty Falls. The government said the objective is to extend tourism activity beyond Mall Road to other parts of the town.
The number of tourists visiting Mussoorie has increased steadily over the past few years. During the tourist season, destinations such as George Everest, Lal Tibba, Landour and Kempty Falls witness heavy visitor footfall.
The roads leading to these locations are comparatively narrow, resulting in frequent traffic congestion. The government believes the proposed ropeway will reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, enabling tourists to reach several major attractions in less time while also easing traffic congestion for local residents.
At present, tourists traveling from George Everest to Kempty Falls have to take a longer route via Hathipaon, Company Garden, Library Chowk, Gandhi Chowk, Picture Palace, Bhatta Village and Kempty Road.
The proposed ropeway is expected to simplify this journey. According to the government, once the project becomes operational, tourists will be able to visit several major attractions in Mussoorie during a single trip. The government also stated that the project is expected to reduce travel time, improve the visitor experience and provide fresh momentum to the local tourism industry. It believes the project will play an important role in establishing Mussoorie as a modern and organized tourist destination in the future.
