Sonam Raghuvanshi’s troubles increase, Supreme Court seeks reply on Meghalaya Police’s petition

New Delhi: Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, has got a big relief from the Supreme Court. The court has clearly refused to immediately put a stay on the bail granted to him by the Meghalaya High Court. However, considering the seriousness of this matter, the Supreme Court has issued a show cause notice to Sonam Raghuvanshi.

The court sought answers from him

The court has sought his answer as to why his bail should not be canceled completely? The Justice bench made it clear during the hearing that since the accused Sonam has already been released from jail, it would not be appropriate to interfere in her liberty at this juncture and impose an interim stay on her release. After this order, Sonam will remain on bail in Shillong till the next hearing on Thursday.

Solicitor General argued serious allegations

During the court proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Meghalaya government, strongly opposed Sonam’s bail. He argued that the murder charges against Sonam are very serious. In the past too, many of his bail petitions have been rejected by the court. He tried to assure the court that this case was not merely a technical error at the time of arrest, but was part of a well-planned conspiracy.

fear of absconding

Meghalaya Police and the state government, in their special leave petition, have expressed fear that if the main accused remains out of jail, she may abscond to escape the clutches of the law. The government believes that the presence of the accused outside may affect the fair investigation of the case and the safety of witnesses. At present, all eyes are on the next heated debate of the Supreme Court to be held on Thursday.

Important comment of Supreme Court in Sonam Raghuvanshi case

The Supreme Court has raised questions while hearing the case of Sonam Raghuvanshi. During the hearing, the lawyer appearing on behalf of Sonam Raghuvanshi argued that at the time of arrest his client was neither given the facility of a lawyer nor was any concrete basis given for the arrest. On this argument, the Supreme Court questioned that if this issue was so important, then why was it not raised earlier in the initial legal processes?

Bail remains intact till next hearing

Sonam Raghuvanshi will currently remain out on bail till the next hearing. His lawyer assured the court that there is no recovery left in the case. Sonam is currently living in Shillong under strict conditions, due to which there is no scope for tampering with evidence. Citing the principle of ‘bail is a rule and jail is an exception’, the court said that it is trying to balance the interests of both the parties. However, the final decision on the plea of cancellation of bail of Meghalaya government will be taken only after the next hearing.
