Amidst global warming, the crisis of ‘El Niño’ is deepening. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned in a recent report that the El Nino conditions developing in the tropical Pacific Ocean are going to become even more powerful in the coming months. This seasonal change could lead to an unexpected increase in the incidence of devastating heatwaves, droughts and extremely heavy rainfall across the world. According to WMO’s Global Seasonal Climate Update report, this seasonal upheaval may be at its peak between July and September, which is sure to have a direct impact on the global climate pattern.
What is El Nino and why is there increased concern? According to WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo, El Nino conditions have already taken shape and are strengthening very rapidly. El Nino is actually a phase of the ‘El Nino Southern Oscillation’ (ENSO) cycle, in which sea temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean go well above normal. This process disrupts weather systems around the world. Its impact is visible not only on land, but also in the form of rising ocean temperatures and severe heatwaves, which are a big challenge for human life and the environment.
El Nino will have a huge impact on India’s monsoon This warning is even more worrying for India, because the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has already confirmed that El Nino is active. Generally the effect of El Nino weakens the monsoon rains in India. The figures of June this year are also pointing in the same direction, where about 40 percent less rainfall than normal has been recorded in the country. The situation in Central India is even more critical, where rainfall has decreased by up to 50 percent. The Meteorological Department has already indicated that there is a possibility of less than normal rainfall in the month of July as well, due to which clouds of crisis are looming over agriculture and water resources.
