From UNSC campaign to energy security, Jaishankar took India’s message to 6 countries
Knews Desk- Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is leaving on an important tour of six countries from today. During this tour, he will visit four countries of West Asia—Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman—apart from America and Belgium. The objective of this visit is to further strengthen India’s strategic, economic and diplomatic relations, ensure energy security and strengthen India’s role on global platforms.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar will first visit Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. In these countries he will meet his counterpart foreign ministers and other senior leaders. Bilateral relations, energy cooperation, trade, investment, regional security and issues related to the Indian diaspora are likely to be discussed in these meetings. The visit is taking place at a time when the geopolitical situation in West Asia is constantly changing. There are concerns about energy supplies in the region due to tensions between Iran and the US. India fulfills a major part of its oil and gas needs from this region. In such a situation, New Delhi’s priority is to maintain uninterrupted energy supply and maintain strong communication with its strategic partners.
After West Asia, the Foreign Minister will go to America. In New York he will launch India’s official campaign for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2028-29 on July 13. India has long been advocating strengthening its role in global institutions and comprehensive reforms in the UN Security Council. The launch of this campaign is considered an important part of India’s global diplomatic strategy. After the US tour, Jaishankar will reach Brussels, the capital of Belgium on 14 and 15 July. Here he will participate in the third ministerial-level meeting of the India-European Union (EU) Trade and Technology Council (TTC). Topics like trade, technology, digital cooperation, supply chain, green energy and emerging technologies will be discussed in this meeting. Apart from this, he will also hold bilateral talks with senior leaders of the European Union and Belgium.
Before this tour, the Foreign Minister had also completed a tour of Caribbean countries. India signed eight agreements with Trinidad and Tobago in a range of sectors including tourism, healthcare, infrastructure, solar energy, Ayurveda and education. The purpose of these agreements is to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries. During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Jaishankar met Prime Minister Kamala Prasad-Bissessar and other senior leaders and reviewed bilateral relations. There were also discussions on increasing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as infrastructure, security, forensics, healthcare and capacity building.
Foreign policy experts believe that this multi-country tour of Jaishankar is a part of India’s active diplomacy. Issues like energy security in West Asia, India’s campaign for the UN Security Council in America and trade and technology partnership with Europe give special importance to this visit. In the coming days, the results of these meetings will be considered important from the point of view of India’s global relations and strategic interests.
