IMD issues orange alert for heavy rain, schools and colleges will remain closed in Mumbai tomorrow
Mumbai: Monsoon has again gained momentum in Mumbai. Due to warning of heavy rain and strong winds, BMC has taken a big decision. Now on Monday, July 6, all government, private and municipal schools and colleges of Mumbai will remain closed.
BMC took precautionary measures
On Sunday, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued a statement saying that IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai. The department has predicted heavy rain and strong winds in the city on Monday. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of the students.
It was made clear in the statement that only educational institutions will remain closed. Government and private offices will open normally. People have been appealed not to leave their homes without essential work.
Mumbai is in trouble since last few days
The continuous rains for the last few days have affected Mumbai a lot. Many areas of the city are flooded. Incidents of falling trees have also been reported at various places. There are also problems in traffic and operation of local trains. The Meteorological Department says that at present there is no possibility of relief. Heavy rains with strong winds may continue in Mumbai and surrounding suburbs.
Civil agencies alert
BMC has instructed all concerned departments to be prepared to deal with any rain-related emergency. Pumping and relief teams have been asked to be deployed in waterlogged areas. The Municipal Corporation has asked people to follow the advice of the Meteorological Department. Especially people living in low-lying areas and coastal areas have been instructed to remain alert.
What does orange alert mean?
According to IMD, orange alert means "be prepared". This means that there may be heavy to very heavy rains and life may be affected. In such a situation, it is important that people avoid unnecessary travel and follow the instructions of the administration. The Meteorological Department has predicted 100-150 mm of rain in Mumbai in the next 24 hours.
Also, winds can blow at a speed of 50-60 km per hour. At present the administration is keeping a close eye on the situation. Children will get relief from the closure of schools and colleges, but office going people must check the weather updates before leaving home.
