Rain stopped the pace in Mumbai, everything from flights to traffic was affected; BMC announced holiday in schools

Mumbai: Continuous heavy rains in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, have increased the problems of common people. Incidents like waterlogging, traffic jams and falling of trees have affected life in many areas. The effect of rain is also being seen on air services, due to which many passengers are facing problems. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain and strong winds for the next 24 hours. Keeping this in view, the administration has taken important decisions as a precautionary measure.

Taking the warning of heavy rain seriously, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared holiday in all government and private schools on Monday, July 6. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of the students. BMC said in its official statement that after the warning of the Meteorological Department, it was not considered safe for children to come to schools. Therefore, it has been decided to keep all BMC run, government and private schools of the city closed. However, the administration has also clarified that this order will apply only to schools. Government offices, private companies and other institutions will remain open at their scheduled time like normal days.

Educational institutions will remain closed in Thane and Navi Mumbai also

In view of the continuous rains in Mumbai as well as in Thane district, the district administration has declared holiday in all educational institutions. According to the order issued by District Magistrate Shri Krishna Nath Panchal, all Anganwadis, Kindergartens, Primary and Secondary schools of the district will remain closed on Monday. Apart from this, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has also declared holiday in all the schools, giving priority to the safety of the students. Navi Mumbai Mayor Sujata Patil and Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde have appealed to the citizens to come out of the house only when absolutely necessary and follow the guidelines issued by the Meteorological Department.

Life affected by rain

Due to continuous rain on Sunday, there was waterlogging in many parts of Mumbai. Due to waterlogging on many major roads, traffic slowed down and people took a long time to travel long distances. The impact of bad weather was also visible at the airport, where delays in operation of some flights were reported. Incidents of falling of trees were also reported in different areas of the city, due to which the local administration had to engage in relief work. Late evening, an incident of collapse of a part of a multi-storey chawl was also reported in Mankhurd area, after which the relief and rescue team immediately reached the spot. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation.

Record rain increased concern

According to BMC, from 6 pm on July 4 to 6 pm on July 5, more than 265 mm of rainfall was recorded in Mumbai city. In the suburban areas, more than 227 mm rainfall was recorded during the same period. According to the data of the Meteorological Department, the maximum rainfall of 143.1 mm was recorded in Gaganbawda area. Due to continuous rains, there is a possibility of water logging in low-lying areas.

Appeal to people to be cautious

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain and strong winds on Monday also. The administration has appealed to the citizens to avoid unnecessary travel till the weather becomes normal, avoid going to waterlogged areas and in case of any emergency, contact the helpline of the local administration. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation and if needed, additional relief and rescue teams have also been kept ready, so that any emergency can be dealt with immediately.
