Sri Lankan jail becomes a field of death! 25 killed, 100 injured in bloody clash between prisoners; Army deployed to handle the situation
Sri Lanka. A violent clash between prisoners in a prison in the coastal city of Negombo took a horrific turn. So far 25 people have died in this bloody conflict, while about 100 people are said to be injured. Along with prisoners, jail officials are also suspected to be among the dead. After the situation worsened, the administration had to take the help of the army.
Violence broke out in an overcrowded jail-
According to the information, this violence started on Sunday between the convicted prisoners and the prisoners in judicial custody. Within no time the dispute escalated so much that the entire jail was engulfed in violence. This prison in Negombo is located about 35 kilometers north of the capital Colombo and has been suffering from the problem of overcrowding for a long time.
Prisoners snatched weapons, situation went out of control-
According to local media reports, some prisoners snatched weapons from prison guards during the clash. After this the violence flared up further, due to which many people lost their lives and a large number of people were injured. At present, the exact reasons behind the violence are being investigated.
Army and police took charge-
The Sri Lankan Army was called in to assist the police to gain control of the situation. Army spokesperson Brigadier Waruna Gamage said that the security forces are on full alert and a search operation is being conducted in the jail premises. Officials say that work to confirm the number of dead and injured is still going on.
Horrific scene seen in the video-
Video footage released by local TV channels showed injured prisoners being taken to hospital in police buses. Many injured were seen lying on the floor of the bus. At the same time, a large number of police and security forces have been deployed outside the jail so that any untoward situation can be dealt with.
At present, the investigation of the entire matter is going on and the administration is busy strengthening the security arrangements in the jail premises and finding out the reasons for the violence.
