PM Modi reaches Indonesia, this visit will strengthen ‘Mahasagar’ vision

Jakarta, July 6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Indonesian capital Jakarta on Monday in the first leg of his three-nation official visit. President Prabowo Subianto welcomed PM Modi at the airport. The purpose of this visit is to review relations between the two countries and further strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. After Indonesia, PM Modi will also visit Australia and New Zealand.

On reaching Jakarta, PM Modi wrote on social media handle X, ‘I have reached Jakarta. I was very impressed by the way President Prabowo Subianto welcomed me at the airport.

At the same time, before leaving for the three-nation visit, PM Modi said, ‘My visit to Indonesia and Australia, located in the Eastern and Southern Indian Ocean respectively, followed by a visit to New Zealand, will further strengthen India’s Act East Policy and Ocean Vision as well as our vision towards a free and open Indo-Pacific region.’

It is noteworthy that ‘MAHASAGAR’ framework – whose full name is ‘Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions’ (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions). It reflects India’s institutional framework to promote security, stability and inclusive development in the maritime domain.

PM Modi will also address the Indian expatriate community in Jakarta

This is Prime Minister Modi’s fourth visit to Indonesia and his first bilateral visit after India-Indonesia relations were upgraded to the level of comprehensive strategic partnership in May 2018. During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral discussions with President Prabowo Subianto and review the progress made in the partnership. In Jakarta the Prime Minister will address a huge gathering of the Indian expatriate community.

India and Indonesia have historical and cordial relations. In keeping with these special relations, the Prime Minister will also visit the Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, a major UNESCO World Heritage Site in Indonesia.

PM Modi said in his departure statement, ‘I am visiting Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from 6 to 11 July 2026. I will be visiting Indonesia from 6 to 8 July at the invitation of the President of Indonesia, Mr. Prabowo Subianto. During my first visit to Indonesia in 2018, India and Indonesia elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This will be my first bilateral visit after that. This visit follows the state visit of President Prabowo to India, who was the chief guest at our Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2025.

PM Modi said, ‘India and Indonesia have strong civilizational and people-to-people ties and my visit will further strengthen all aspects of our multidimensional partnership. During this visit, I will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Indonesia and visit the Prambanan temple complex in Yogyakarta with President Prabowo, another remarkable testament to our close cultural ties.
