Shocking reality about Jan Dhan Yojana! 15.77 crore bank accounts in the country are ‘inactive’
- Out of the accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, as many as 15.77 crore accounts are inactive
- 55 crore 44 lakh accounts under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana across the country by 31 March 2025
- With the launch of Jan Dhan Yojana in 2014, the aim was to bring banking facilities to every family
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Dainik Navrastra has learned that among the accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which was launched to connect the economically weaker sections of the country with the formal banking sector, as many as 15.77 crore accounts have become inactive. On the one hand, record deposits are accumulating in these accounts, on the other hand, the reality has come to light that a large number of accounts are without transactions.
According to the statistics, 55 crore 44 lakh accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana across the country by the end of March 31, 2025. Out of these, 15 crore 77 lakh accounts have gone into inactive category due to non-transaction for a long time. This figure is about 28.45 percent of the total accounts.

The aim was to bring banking facilities to every family
The special thing is that the amount deposited in Jan Dhan accounts is continuously increasing. At the end of March 2025, the total deposits in these accounts are more than Rs 2.63 lakh crore. The average deposit per account is seen to be around Rs 4.750. Therefore, although there is an increase in the confidence of economically weaker sections in the banking system, there is still concern regarding the active use of accounts.
When the central government launched the Jan Dhan Yojana in 2014, it aimed to bring banking facilities to every family. Facilities like Zero Balance Account, Rupay Debit Card, Accident Insurance, Life Insurance and Overdraft got a huge response to this scheme. But after opening the account, it has been seen that many beneficiaries are not doing regular transactions. Experts in the banking sector are of the opinion that some accounts become inactive as there are no transactions after the accumulation of government subsidy or other benefits.

So there will be no expected increase in banking transactions
According to the independent department regarding Marathwada, the official statistics of inactive Jan Dhan accounts are not publicly available, but in rural areas, the account holders need to be more aware of digital transactions, banking services and financial literacy. Concern is being expressed that the target of opening crores of accounts will not be achieved and there will not be an expected reduction in actual banking transactions.
