PF nomination rules changed after marriage! Is it mandatory to make husband or wife a nominee?

Getting married is a big and pleasant change in life, but do you know that as soon as you get married, the rules related to your Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account also change? If you have recently got married, then you need to immediately focus on your PF nomination. According to the new rules of EPF Scheme 2026, old nominations become invalid after marriage. In such a situation, it is very important to know whether it is legally mandatory to make your spouse the nominee after marriage or you can choose someone else also?

Why does nomination have to be changed after marriage?

EPF Scheme 2026 makes it clear that after marriage, all your previous nominations will automatically become invalid. It simply means that it is mandatory for you to fill a new nomination form after this new beginning of your life. It is important to do this so that there is no legal hurdle or delay in the settlement of EPF benefits in future.

A common belief is that it is mandatory to make your spouse a nominee after marriage, but the truth is that the rules do not give you any such compulsion. You can nominate one or more ‘eligible family members’ of your choice.

Who can you make your nominee?

It is important for every employee to know who is included in the definition of ‘family’ under the Code on Social Security, 2020:

  • Your spouse (husband or wife).
  • Your minor children or adopted children.
  • Children in education up to the age of 21 (who are dependent on you).
  • Your unmarried daughters.
  • Sick or disabled children (who are completely dependent on you).
  • Dependent parents (this also includes in-laws and in-laws of female employees).
  • If you are unmarried and parents are not alive, minor siblings.

Are there different rules for those without family?

Members who do not yet have a family can choose any person of their choice as nominee. But as soon as you get married, the situation changes. After marriage, you will have to update your nomination and give priority to eligible family members only.

Why is it very important to update the nomination?

EPF nomination is directly related to the security of your family. It decides who will receive the deposited amount if unfortunately the member dies. If you have not changed the name of the nominee, there may be long delays in claim settlement and legal disputes. If you choose more than one nominee, you can also decide who will receive the amount (in terms of percentage). Therefore, to avoid any untoward incident, check and update your nomination details timely.
