Does personal license work when working with Ola, Uber, Zomato, Swiggy? find out
Companies like Ola, Uber or Zomato, Swiggy have become a great source of part-time and full-time income for today’s young generation. With a smartphone in hand and a car of his own, anyone can easily start this job. But legally speaking, when you drive for these companies, you are acting ‘professionally’. Do you need a personal license or a transport license at that time? And what are the rules for cars with yellow plates? Let’s understand in simple terms.
1. Zomato, Rules for Swiggy and Delivery Boys (Two-Wheelers).
If you work in food or grocery delivery with companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit or Domino’s, then having a normal personal license of MCWG (Motorcycle With Gear) is sufficient.
As per the current rules, delivery by two-wheelers does not require a special transport license or a yellow number plate. You can legally do this from your white number plate personal bike. However, some cities use a yellow number plate for commercial e-bikes (which are rented), but a simple license for the driver.

2. wet, Rules for Uber and Rapido Cab Drivers (Four-Wheelers).
For four-wheelers or cab drivers, the rules change completely and are very strict.
- Yellow Pages and Transport License Required: To transport passengers in Ola or Uber, your vehicle is legally required to have a ‘yellow number plate’.
- LICENSE RULE: Earlier it was mandatory to have a special stamp of ‘Transport’ on the license to drive a commercial vehicle and to renew it every 3 years. But, as per the latest Supreme Court guidelines, if you have an LMV (ordinary four-wheeler licence) and the vehicle weight is less than 7,500 kg, you can drive a taxi or cab with a yellow plate on that licence. A separate TR license is not required for this, but the vehicle must be commercial.

3. What if you drive Ola/Uber in a white plate car??
Many people ply their personal white plate cars as Ola/Uber or Rapido bike taxis to earn money. This is a serious offense under the law. If caught by the RTO flying squad, the vehicle can be impounded and a hefty fine of up to Rs 10,000. More importantly, the insurance company completely refuses to pay claims in case of an accident with such cars.
In short, if you are a delivery boy, a simple bike license and a white board will do. But if you want to drive an Ola-Uber cab, your LMV license will be legally valid there only if the vehicle is yellow plate.
