A school bus was involved in a road accident on National Highway-48 (NH-48) in Gurugram on Tuesday as heavy rainfall continued to disrupt traffic across the National Capital Region. Initial reports indicated that the accident occurred on a rain-soaked stretch of the highway, adding to concerns over road safety during the ongoing monsoon season. Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident.

According to preliminary information available till Tuesday evening, the bus met with the accident amid reduced visibility and waterlogged road conditions. Emergency responders and local police reached the spot soon after the incident to manage traffic and assess the situation. There was no immediate official confirmation of any fatalities, and authorities were in the process of verifying the number of passengers and any injuries sustained.

The accident occurred as Gurugram continued to grapple with heavy monsoon showers that inundated several major roads, including stretches of NH-48. Waterlogging and traffic congestion were reported from key junctions such as Narsinghpur, Rajiv Chowk, AIT Chowk and Khandsa Road, with commuters facing long delays throughout the day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall over parts of Haryana in the coming days.

The incident comes days after transport authorities in Gurugram intensified inspections of school buses following the detection of several safety violations, including missing GPS devices, defective emergency exits and inadequate safety equipment. Officials have been carrying out checks to ensure compliance with prescribed school transport safety norms before the reopening of educational institutions.

NH-48 remains one of the busiest transport corridors in the Delhi-NCR region and has witnessed repeated traffic disruptions during the monsoon. Road safety experts have long flagged poor drainage, waterlogging and reduced visibility as major risk factors during heavy rainfall. Recently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) initiated safety upgrades at multiple accident-prone stretches along the Gurugram section of the highway following a road safety audit.

Police have urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe distances and avoid overspeeding during adverse weather conditions. Further details regarding the cause of the accident and the condition of those on board are awaited as officials continue their investigation.
