India among the leading countries in the global race for AI data centers!
Most of this investment is concentrated around Mumbai and Chennai, which are close to undersea cable networks and are the best locations for hyperscale data centres, The Citizen reported. At the same time, Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a hub on the eastern coast of the country.
These facilities require large amounts of electricity and water to cool specialized and heat-producing computing hardware. They also depend on robust power grids, high-capacity fiber-optic connectivity, and increased access to renewable energy.
The fast-growing hub also includes Visakhapatnam, the economic hub of the southern coastal state of Andhra Pradesh.
Google has promised to invest $15 billion in the sector, while Adani Group has also announced plans to invest $100 billion to build a 5GW AI platform by 2035.
The report further said that technology hubs in the hinterland such as Hyderabad and Pune are rapidly expanding their cloud computing and AI infrastructure, expanding India’s digital reach beyond the coastal areas.
The government’s supportive policy is playing an important role in promoting these projects. Under this, developers are being given long-term financing at concessional rates and huge tax incentives, including tax holidays till 2047 for companies investing in green AI infrastructure.
Due to huge investments in hyperscale AI projects, it is estimated that India’s operational data center capacity will increase to approximately 6.5 gigawatts by the end of this decade.
According to the report, thanks to heavy investment, supportive government policies and a rapidly growing digital ecosystem, the country is on track to become one of the world’s leading AI powers, trailing only the US and China in global AI competitiveness.
