Preparation for strict action on IVF clinics! NCW formed high level expert committee, rules of ART center and gamete banks will be reviewed.
New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken a major step regarding the irregularities coming to light in the rapidly growing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) sector in the country. The Commission has constituted a high-level expert committee to review the existing regulatory framework and laws related to IVF clinics, ART centers and gamete (sperm and egg) banks.
According to the statement issued by NCW, this committee will be headed by retired Delhi High Court judge Asha Menon. The objective of the committee is to comprehensively evaluate the existing regulations while protecting the reproductive rights of women, ensuring their dignity and security.
Experts from many fields will be involved
The committee includes experts from the judiciary, medicine, forensic science, law enforcement, gynecologists and obstetricians, public policy and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Prominent members of the committee include former IPS officer Sundari Nanda, former member of the National Commission for Women Archana Majumdar, NCW advisory committee member Dr. Shipra Dhar, senior advocate Mahalaxmi Pavani, Dr. Sarvesh Tandon of Safdarjung Hospital, gynecologist and obstetrician of AIIMS Dr. Neeta Singh, social worker Dr. Nayana Sahasrabuddhe, Dr. Rajnikanth of FOGSI, ART Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Kanchan Khattar, nominated representative of NCW and senior coordinator of NCW.
Focus will be on protection of women’s rights
The Commission says that the committee will review the existing laws and regulatory system and give necessary suggestions, so that transparency in the processes related to IVF and ART services can be increased and women’s rights and safety can be effectively ensured.
