Aditya Birla Kansariguda Alumina Refinery Expansion

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today met Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, to review the conglomerate’s ongoing and proposed investments in Odisha.

A key highlight of the meeting was Hindalco Industries Limited’s proposal to expand its greenfield alumina refinery at Kansariguda in Kashipur Tehsil, Rayagada district. Initially planned with a capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and an investment of ₹8,000 crore, the Group has now proposed an additional Rs 12,000 crore investment to enhance the refinery’s capacity by 2 MTPA. With this expansion, the Kansariguda refinery will reach a total capacity of 3 MTPA, representing an overall investment of approximately Rs 20,000 crore.

The project is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment, while creating opportunities for local enterprises, service providers, and downstream industries.

Welcoming the proposal, CM Majhi emphasised that Odisha’s mineral wealth must translate into greater value addition, advanced manufacturing, and quality employment. “Aluminium is central to our vision. We aim not only to lead India in alumina and aluminium production but also to build a globally competitive ecosystem across the entire value chain,” he said.

The Chief Minister assured the Group of full support from the State Government, including facilitation of land, infrastructure, utilities, and statutory approvals. Discussions also covered potential investments in copper refining, technical textiles, jewellery manufacturing, renewable energy, and advanced aluminium products, reinforcing Odisha’s position as India’s leading metals and metallurgy hub.
