IND vs ENG: Has India Ever Been Whitewashed In A T20I Series?
It has been a terrible initiation for Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain as things have taken a complete flip for the Men in Blue.
The team that was hailed as one of the greatest T20 sides ever assembled when India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 a few months ago is now struggling to put up even one victory, having lost five out of five completed matches on its current UK trip. The nigh-indomitable now has its cracks laid bare.
The results for Iyer so far – 2-0 in Ireland and 3-0 in England with one match remaining – look poor for both the new captain and the selectors who took the bold move to drop the T20 World Cup-winning skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, under whom India didn’t lose a single T20I series/tournament in two years.
Further, Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir also made another questionable move by dropping Sanju Samson, the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, in favor of the popular Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has failed to go past 15 in his three outings.
India have already lost two consecutive T20I series for the first time since 2019, which included losing to Ireland for the first-ever instance.
On Saturday, Iyer and Gambhir would be looking not only for a consolation victory but also to avoid an ignominious whitewash, something that this T20I unit has never faced in its two decades’ history.
IND vs ENG: Has India Ever Been Whitewashed In A T20I Series Of Three Or More Matches?
No, India have never suffered a whitewash in a T20I series of three or more matches in their history since making their T20I debut in 2006. Prior to this England series, India had played 40 T20I series that included three or more games, and across all those 40 series, India won at least one match.
So on Saturday in Southampton in the IND vs ENG 5th T20I, India are fighting to avoid a historic embarrassment, as a loss will hand Gambhir and co. India’s first-ever whitewash in a T20I series that includes three or more games. If India lose today, this whitewash will be another huge blot on Gambhir’s legacy as India’s coach.
Meanwhile, India are already a depleted unit for the 5th T20I as Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana both have been ruled out owing to hamstring injuries.
