Sribhoomi: Assam Police, in a major crackdown in Sribhoomi district as part of the ongoing campaign against drug trafficking in the state, has seized Yaba tablets worth about ₹1 crore. Two people have been arrested in this case. According to officials, the recovered drug consignment was to be transported further through illegal networks. The police is now busy investigating the entire smuggling network.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave information

Sharing information about the action through social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state government’s campaign to make Assam drug-free will continue. He said that strict action will be taken against those involved in drug smuggling and no criminal will be spared. Referring to the popular TV series Breaking Bad, he said that there is no place for such illegal business in Assam.

What are Yaba tablets and why are they dangerous?

Yaba is a banned synthetic drug, which mainly consists of a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine. This drug is declared illegal in many countries and its consumption can have serious effects on mental and physical health. Law enforcement agencies consider it to be one of the rapidly spreading dangerous drugs among the youth.

Action taken on the basis of intelligence in Sribhoomi

After the police received a tip-off, a special operation was launched, during which a huge quantity of Yaba tablets were recovered while searching the suspects. During the action, two accused were arrested from the spot. In the preliminary investigation, the police suspect that this consignment may be linked to some big interstate or international smuggling network.

Investigative agencies are investigating the links of smuggling network

The arrested accused are being interrogated to find out from where the recovered drugs were brought and to what place they were to be delivered. The investigating agencies are also examining the mobile phones, financial transactions and contacts of the accused. Officials say that further arrests may be made based on the investigation.

Stopping drug smuggling in North-East is a big challenge

Due to Northeast India’s international borders, the region has long been considered vulnerable to drug trafficking. For this reason, Assam Police and other security agencies are continuously trying to break the smuggling network by conducting joint operations. Several major drugs seizures and arrests have been recorded in the state in recent years.

Government assured to continue the campaign

The state government has made it clear that the campaign against illegal drug trade will be intensified in future also. Officials say that the priority of the agencies is not only to arrest the smugglers but to eliminate the entire network. The government has also appealed to the citizens to immediately inform the police about any suspicious activity, so that the society can be kept safe from the menace of drugs.
