Myths: Coffee culture is growing rapidly in India these days. People are moving away from instant coffee and turning to cafes. They are exploring new flavors. But the truth is that there are many myths associated with coffee, which people blindly believe.Miguel Villaquiram, CEO and co-founder of Libertario, exposes five major coffee myths that every coffee lover should stop believing immediately.
Does dark roast mean the strongest and best coffee?
Absolutely not. People often think that the darker the coffee beans, the stronger and better the coffee will be. But this is not true. Roast level depends solely on your taste preferences. Dark roast gives coffee a smoky and bitter taste. Whereas light roast preserves the coffee’s original and natural flavors.
Does expensive coffee simply mean overpriced?
People often think that some coffees are overpriced. According to Miguel, this high price is due to the hard work of the farmers. Ripe cherries are hand-picked to ensure the best quality coffee. They are carefully processed. They also undergo strict quality checks before export. This means you’re paying not just for the brand, but for the quality and hard work.
Is just having good beans enough?
If you think that simply buying premium-quality beans will make the best coffee, you’re wrong. The method of brewing coffee is just as important. If the water quality, temperature, grinder calibration, and coffee-water ratio aren’t right, even coffee made from the world’s most expensive beans can taste awful. The method must be right.
Is it okay to drink immediately after roasting?
We tend to think that everything is best when it’s fresh. But that’s not the case with coffee. During roasting, carbon dioxide gas is released from the beans. Brewing immediately won’t produce the true flavor. Most coffees only achieve their true, balanced taste a few days or weeks after roasting. It’s best to wait a bit.
Is good coffee always bitter?
This is the biggest myth. Properly grown and processed coffee is naturally sweet and complex. You can get chocolate, caramel, berry, and floral notes without the addition of any syrups or additional flavors. If coffee is excessively bitter, it likely means it’s been over-roasted or brewed incorrectly.
Note: If you are also a true coffee lover, then next time you enjoy your cup, keep these things in mind.
