Commonwealth Games: Day 9 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been a great day for India, with India winning two medals in the javelin throw. The focus was on star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won the silver medal with a throw of 85.83m, while Yashveer Singh won the bronze medal with a throw of 85.41m. The gold medal in this event went to Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka, who threw 89.75m.
Neeraj threw his season’s best throw in the second attempt.
A total of 13 athletes had qualified for the final event of javelin throw in the Commonwealth Games 2026 being held in Glasgow, Scotland, in which the maximum three athletes were from India. Neeraj Chopra had thrown 80.97 meters in his first attempt in this medal event, but in his second attempt he threw his season’s best throw, throwing the javelin 85.83 meters and held on to the first position for some time. Neeraj threw 81.29 meters in the third round and 80.73 meters in the fourth round but could not dislodge Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage from the first position. Neeraj deliberately fouled after throwing in the 5th and 6th rounds and thus won the silver medal.
Yashveer Singh turned the tables in the last round.
Apart from Neeraj Chopra, Yashveer Singh and Rohit Yadav were also part of the javelin throw medal event, in which Rohit Yadav finished at 7th position with a throw of 81.56 meters. Yashveer Singh turned the tables in the sixth i.e. the last round, he was at 6th position till the 5th round, but in his last attempt, Yashveer Singh threw 85.41 meters and took the third position and won the bronze medal. This was also Yashveer Singh’s personal best throw.
