SC Mangalsutra Incident: CJI Surya Kant’s big statement on woman removing Mangalsutra in Supreme Court, said- ‘Respect the institutions…’

A very shocking incident came to light in the Supreme Court on Monday (13 July 2026), which stunned everyone present in the courtroom. A woman started taking off her mangalsutra in front of the bench led by Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant, pleading for early hearing of her case. Now on Tuesday (14 July 2026), a very important and serious reaction of CJI Surya Kant has come to light on this entire sensitive incident. CJI Surya Kant’s response: ‘Respect for every person, but there are limits to conduct’ Responding to this unexpected incident, Chief Justice Surya Kant said, "If a woman expresses her problems and pain, it is our responsibility to listen to her carefully. When any person comes to the top court of the country with his complaint, he should definitely be heard."

Along with this, while teaching the lesson of dignity, he further said, "The court has its own dignity. We have full respect for every individual, but it is the ultimate duty of all of us to respect all our constitutional institutions. One should not misuse the opportunity given by one’s conduct."

Know what happened in the courtroom on Monday? Actually, on Monday the CJI bench was hearing regular cases. Meanwhile, a woman present in the courtroom suddenly stood up and started pleading loudly in front of the CJI. The woman claimed that she had specially come to Delhi from Hyderabad and her case should be heard immediately. To emphasize his point, he started taking out his Mangalsutra in front of everyone, due to which even the lawyers and security personnel present there were stunned. Court assured: Hearing will be held next Monday. Showing sensitivity towards the woman’s plea, CJI Surya Kant assured her that her case will be heard next Monday. The CJI clarified that considering the nature of this case, a special bench will take cognizance of it, the date of which has already been fixed. CJI’s appeal: No need to come to Delhi, join online. Chief Justice gave relief to the woman and advised her that there is no need for her to get worried again and come from Hyderabad to Delhi for the next hearing. She can participate in the court proceedings through video conferencing i.e. online, sitting at home. However, the woman refused to join online, saying that she would present her case in the courtroom itself.
