Is Balochistan now independent from Pakistan? Know the entire process of becoming an independent nation and International Law

These days, a letter named “Republic of Balochistan” is going viral on social media. It has been claimed that Balochistan has declared its independence from Pakistan. Now, it has adopted its own national flag, national anthem, new currency and independent administrative system. It has also been claimed in the letter that it has control over 85% of the area of Balochistan. Through the letter, an appeal has been made to the international community to recognize it as an independent country. However, these claims have not been independently verified and no country in the world or the United Nations has recognized Balochistan as an independent nation.

Has Balochistan really become independent from PAK?

The simple answer is, no. According to the information so far, the claim for independence of Balochistan has been made mainly by separatist leaders and organizations. The government of Pakistan still considers Balochistan as its province and claims administrative and military control there. On the other hand, separatist organizations claim that their influence has increased in many areas, but these claims have not been confirmed by any independent international agency.

What were the claims made in the viral letter?

The viral statement said that Balochistan has adopted its own national flag, national anthem and currency named “Balochi Phallus”. It was claimed that control over gold-copper mines, gas fields and coal mines has been established. It was also said that a large number of Pakistani security forces personnel have resigned and supported the Baloch side and preparations are underway to completely pull out the Pakistan Army by the end of 2026. However, no one has officially confirmed these claims.

Does declaring independence create a new country?

No. Under international law, any region can declare independence, but mere declaration does not make it an independent nation. To practically establish the existence of a new country, four criteria have to be fulfilled according to the Montevideo Convention of 1933.

What is the whole process of becoming an independent nation?

There is no set global process for the formation of any new country, but some major criteria are considered at the international level.

  • First, there should be a permanent population in that area.
  • Second, it should have clear and defined geographical limits.
  • Third, there should be an effective government which can run the administration.
  • Fourth, that government should have the ability to establish diplomatic relations with other countries.

Why is international recognition most important?

The biggest challenge for any new country is to gain international recognition. If other countries do not accept it as an independent nation, do not establish diplomatic relations with it or do not get membership of the United Nations, then it becomes very difficult to operate as an independent nation.

As of today, Balochistan has not been recognized as an independent nation by any sovereign country or the United Nations.

How to get membership of United Nations?

To become a member of the United Nations, any new country has to first apply. After this, the UN Security Council recommends it and then if the proposal is passed with the required majority in the General Assembly, it gets membership. Mere declaration of independence does not guarantee membership.

Have there been such examples in history?

Yes. Countries like South Sudan, Timor-Leste and Eritrea got the status of independent nations after a long struggle and international recognition. At the same time, there are many areas which have declared independence, but due to limited or no international recognition, their status remains disputed even today.

What is the background of Balochistan dispute?

Actually, Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan, where conflict has been going on between the separatist movement and security forces for many decades. Separatist organizations have been accusing Pakistan of resource exploitation, political neglect and human rights violations. Whereas Pakistan calls these organizations terrorists and separatists. This struggle has been giving rise to claims of independence from time to time.

Big claims have been made in the viral letter like independence of Balochistan and control over 85% of the area, but till now these claims have not been independently confirmed. Neither has Pakistan given up its claim on Balochistan, nor has any country or the United Nations recognized it as an independent nation. Therefore, in the present situation, it would not be factually correct to say that Balochistan has now become completely independent from Pakistan.
