India-UK FTA comes into effect from today, Scotch-whisky cheaper by 110%, know which things will see a huge fall in their prices?
Lucknow. The day of 15 July 2026 became a historical milestone in the trade relations between India and Britain. The much-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries has officially come into effect from today, under which huge reductions have been made in the huge duties imposed on imports and exports. As soon as this historic deal becomes effective, many expensive foreign products coming to India from Britain will now be within the reach of common people.
Good news for Scotch and whiskey lovers
According to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the biggest benefit of this agreement will be to the British Scotch and Whiskey Industry, but it will also directly benefit Indian consumers. Till now, there was a heavy tariff of up to 150 percent on imported Scotch whiskey, which will be reduced to just 40 percent in several phases under the FTA. This means that in the coming time, there will be a huge decline of up to 110 percent in the prices of Scotch and whiskey in India.
Britain’s luxury cars will now be cheaper
Under this historic deal, a big change is going to come in the automobile sector of the country. Through the quota system, the tariff on luxury cars will be reduced from 100 percent to 10 percent in a phased manner. With this, Britain’s premium cars like Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Defender will be available in the Indian market at much lower prices. A total of 20,000 cars can be imported at reduced duty in the first year, in which the custom duty on 10,000 cars with petrol engines above 3000cc and diesel engines above 2500cc will be reduced from 110 per cent to 30 per cent, while the duty on 5,000 cars between 1500cc to 3000cc will be reduced from 66 per cent to 50 per cent. It will be reduced to 10 percent level in the next 15 years.
Relief will also be available on beauty and other products
Apart from cars and liquor, prices of cosmetics, beauty products and other consumer goods coming from Britain will also soften. At present, there is an import duty of up to 22 percent on these products, which will either be removed with immediate effect or gradually reduced to zero over a period of 10 years.
Indian goods dominate the British market
This deal is no less than a boon not only for Britain but also for Indian exporters. With the implementation of FTA, 99 percent of Indian products will get entry into the UK market at zero duty. Whereas earlier custom duty of 12 percent on textiles and clothing, 10 percent on base metals and 8 percent on chemicals had to be paid, now Indian clothes, shoes and many types of food products can be sold in Britain easily and at affordable prices.
Both economies will gain momentum
According to the estimates of the British government, due to this FTA with India, Britain’s economy will increase by 4.8 billion pounds, while the real salary of the people there will see an increase of about 2.2 billion pounds. The UK government is calling it the largest and most comprehensive trade agreement ever implemented by India.
