Weather Update: Monsoon Mahaalert! Flash flood warning in 23 districts, next 7 days will be very heavy

Weather Update 17 July: South-west monsoon is fully active across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorm, lightning and strong winds in many states for July 17. There is also a possibility of flash floods and landslides in some states.

According to IMD, rainy season will continue in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Eastern and Western Rajasthan. There is a possibility of thunder, strong winds and lightning in some areas of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh. There is also a danger of landslides in mountainous areas.

Rain with strong winds in Central India

There is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in Eastern and Western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh. Strong winds can blow at a speed of up to 60 km per hour in these areas. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of extremely heavy rain at isolated places in Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha.

Red alert like situation in north-eastern states

There is also a possibility of heavy rain in Bihar, Odisha, Andaman-Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. At the same time, a warning of heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorm and lightning has been issued in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Heavy rain in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa also

In Western India, rainy season will continue in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Marathwada, Saurashtra and Kutch. There is a possibility of heavy rain especially in Konkan, Goa and Central Maharashtra.

Impact of heat wave along with rain in South India

Rain is also expected in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep. However, despite rains, heatwave-like conditions may persist in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Monsoon will remain active for the next seven days

According to IMD, due to the low pressure area formed in the north-west Bay of Bengal, Monsoon will remain active over East, Northeast and North-West India for the next seven days. Along with this, a new Western Disturbance will also be active from July 19, due to which the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rains will increase in many states.

Danger of flash flood in Odisha and Chhattisgarh

The Meteorological Department has predicted 21 cm or more rainfall in some areas of Odisha. Due to this, a serious warning has been issued of flash flood in the low lying areas of 23 districts of Odisha and 13 districts of Chhattisgarh till the morning of July 17. People have been appealed to stay away from rivers and streams and follow the advice of the local administration.
