Team India’s coaching setup under head coach Gautam Gambhir has undergone a major reshuffle with the induction of seasoned domestic stalwart Subhadeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach. The 57-year-old former domestic cricketer, who has never played international matches, steps into the role following the departure of T. Dilip, whose contract was not renewed after the Zimbabwe T20 series. Ghosh’s high-profile appointment brings immense experience from various levels of Indian cricket, and his inaugural assignment with the senior men’s team will be the high-stakes two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which gets underway on August 15.
Who Is Subhadeep Ghosh? A Look at His Domestic Career
Subhadeep Ghosh enjoyed a respectable domestic playing career as a right-handed batsman, representing Assam and Railways on the domestic circuit. Between 1994 and 2004, he featured in 17 first-class matches and 17 List A games. While his playing days did not extend to international arenas, Ghosh carved out an exceptional reputation as a meticulous technical coach and strategist, eventually serving as the head coach of the Assam senior men’s team and earning widespread accolades for his grassroots development work.
Extensive Coaching Credentials with NCA, India A, and IPL Franchises
Ghosh brings a wealth of coaching pedigree to Gautam Gambhir’s backroom staff. He previously spent two successful years as the fielding coach of the Indian women’s national team, serving as an integral part of the support staff during the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup and the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. Furthermore, he has worked extensively at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), guided the India A setup, and gained valuable Indian Premier League (IPL) experience working with prominent franchises like the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders, making him intimately familiar with several current national team players.
Massive Overhaul in Team India’s Backroom Staff
The appointment of Subhadeep Ghosh comes amid a broader transition in Team India’s support staff. The contracts of former fielding coach T. Dilip—who served the men’s team successfully from 2021 through the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and subsequent stints—and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate were not renewed after their respective tenures expired following white-ball assignments. Ten Doeschate has since moved on to take up the role of head of cricket strategy with KKR. With Ghosh joining the ranks, Gambhir’s streamlined coaching unit now features Sitanshu Kotak as batting coach and Morne Morkel as bowling coach as the team gears up for the upcoming Test assignment.
