Big news regarding assembly elections in UP, read details
Lucknow. An important news related to the politics of Uttar Pradesh has come to light. Amidst all the speculations regarding the upcoming assembly elections, the Election Commission has indicated that the elections will be held on time only. The Commission says that Assembly elections are a mandatory process under the Constitution, hence the process of formation of the new Assembly will be completed before the end of the term.
Despite the census, elections will be held on time
In the states including Uttar Pradesh where assembly elections are to be held next year, the census schedule is proposed from 1 February to 28 February 2027. For this reason the question was arising whether the elections could go ahead. The Election Commission says that census and elections are separate legal and constitutional processes. Separate arrangements will be made for both and elections will be conducted before the end of the term of the Assembly.
The tenure of the current assembly will be completed by May 2027.
The current tenure of Uttar Pradesh Assembly is till 22 May 2027. Whereas the tenure of the assemblies of other states like Uttarakhand, Punjab and Goa will end before March 2027. In such a situation, there is a possibility of declaring the election schedule in these states during February-March as per tradition.
Commission’s clear stand on digital voting
In recent times, many discussions had come up regarding online or digital voting. On this, the Election Commission has made it clear that at present there is no plan to implement any such system. During the national media conference, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that the Election Commission fully follows the procedures prescribed under the Constitution and law. He said that in the last one year, the Commission faced many cases in various courts and in most of the cases the decisions of the Commission got judicial support.
Public trust in electoral system maintained
The Election Commission says that the large turnout in the recent assembly elections is proof that voters’ faith in the electoral process remains strong. According to the Commission, all electoral processes including Special Revision of Voter List (SIR) are completed as per the prescribed rules, so that the elections remain fair and transparent.
By-elections will not be held on three seats of UP
Three assembly seats of Uttar Pradesh, Ghosi (Mau), Duddhi (Sonbhadra) and Faridpur (Bareilly) are vacant after the demise of MLAs. However, the Election Commission has decided not to hold by-elections on these seats. The Commission argues that the tenure of the Assembly is now less than one year left. In such a situation, instead of holding by-elections, voting will be held on these seats in the general assembly elections to be held at the scheduled time.
