Arijit Singh manager clarifies retirement rumours

Mumbai: Rumours about singer Arijit Singh making a comeback to playback singing have been put to rest after his manager clarified that the newly released song Yeh Awarapan from Awarapan 2 was recorded before the singer announced his retirement from playback singing earlier this year.

The clarification comes after the song’s release sparked speculation among fans that Arijit had reversed his decision and returned to the industry.

Manager says song was an earlier commitment

Speaking to The Print, Arijit Singh’s manager said the singer is only fulfilling projects that had already been committed before he announced his retirement.

The manager clarified that Arijit has not resumed playback singing for new films and is merely honouring contractual obligations signed before his retirement announcement.

The statement comes amid widespread social media discussions following the release of Yeh Awarapan, with many fans assuming the song marked the singer’s return to Bollywood.

Retirement announcement surprised fans

Arijit Singh surprised the music industry in January 2026 by announcing that he was stepping away from playback singing and would not accept any new assignments in films.

At the time, the singer thanked fans for their support throughout his career, describing playback singing as a memorable journey.

However, he later clarified that he was not retiring from music altogether. Instead, he expressed his desire to focus on Indian classical music and explore new artistic avenues.

Arijit also explained that he enjoys experimenting with music and often changes the arrangements of his songs during live performances because he likes to keep his work fresh.

Reports have suggested that the singer had already recorded several songs before announcing his retirement, with many of those tracks expected to be released through 2027.

Despite stepping away from playback assignments, Arijit has continued to perform at live concerts, including a performance alongside sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar and percussionist Bickram Ghosh shortly after his retirement announcement.

Yeh Awarapan released ahead of film

The song Yeh Awarapan was released on July 21 across major streaming platforms. It has been composed by Amaal Malik, while the lyrics have been written by Rashmi Virag.

The emotional track has generated significant attention, particularly because of its association with the much-awaited sequel to the 2007 cult film Awarapan.

About Awarapan 2

Directed by Nitin Kakkar and written by Bilal Siddiqui, Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi in the lead role alongside Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi, Surendra Vicky, Vijayant Kohli and Atul Kumar.

The film is scheduled to release in theatres on August 14, 2026.

The original Awarapan continues to enjoy a loyal fan following, making both the sequel and its soundtrack highly anticipated among audiences.
