Marco Rubio in ASEAN: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated in the meeting of foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. During this, he met top leaders of many countries including Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Issues like increasing tension in the Middle East, Russia-Ukraine war, South China Sea dispute and security of the Asia-Pacific region were discussed in detail in the meeting.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rubio said that America is facing several global crises simultaneously, but despite this, the Asia-Pacific region remains an important center of its foreign policy. He said that the question often arises that America gets so entangled in one crisis that it is unable to pay attention to other areas, but the reality is that America is actively working with its allies in Asia every day.
Trump’s policy: head for eyes
Marco Rubio also gave a strong message regarding Iran. He said that if Tehran continues its aggressive activities, it will have to pay a heavy price. He said that Iran is definitely expressing its desire for talks, but till now it has not given any indication from which a credible agreement can be expected.

Rubio said that US President Donald Trump’s stance is clear and every provocative action of Iran will be given a stronger response than before. He also said that if Iran targets any ship in the Strait of Hormuz, the US will also retaliate. Responding to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s statement of ‘an eye for an eye’, Rubio said that Trump’s policy is like ‘a head for an eye’.
Offers to mediate on Russia-Ukraine war
Rubio also met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the meeting. He said that America is ready to play the role of mediator to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, he also acknowledged that the solution to this conflict is not easy and it is a big challenge to create a compromise that both sides can accept.

Rubio said that earlier too there had been attempts to negotiate with the mediation of America, but at present they could not progress. Despite this, Washington will continue diplomatic efforts and the US will be ready to play its role in peace talks if both sides are ready.
