A vibrant coastal town is set to see improvements, as people can finally travel there seamlessly for a day by the water or even a weekend exploring the seaside.
Sitting quietly just eight miles outside of Bristol, perched along the Severn Estuary, Portishead is a popular weekend destination. The seaside spot is one of the UK’s biggest towns that has no railway station, and it hasn’t had one for decades. Once upon a time, there was a line known as the Portishead Line, which ran from the town through Tibristhol, but it closed in 1964.
In news that has given the town a new lease of life, it has been announced that the line will be reinstated, backed by an impressive £27.6 million of government funding. Niall Spencer, senior sponsor for Network Rail’s Great Western route, said: “There’s now visible progress right across the route, from bridge upgrades and site clearance to preparations for the new stations themselves.
“It’s exciting to see this long-awaited railway taking shape and moving another step closer to reconnecting local communities with the rail network for the first time in more than six decades.
The railway is expected to provide direct trains from Portishead to Bristol Temple Meads on an hourly basis, taking as little as 25 minutes. In turn, this will cut the current travel time in half and open up a world of possibilities for the already thriving seaside town.
It’s not only convenient, but also a beautiful journey for tourists and locals alike to take in the surrounding scenery as it runs beneath the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and through the Avon Gorge. The special service will be operated by Great Western Railway (GWR), but it’s set to take some time before it is up and running.
Estimated to cost a whopping £200 million in total, this new introduction to the town is no easy feat and will take several years to complete. It is expected to be finalised in 2028.
This isn’t the first investment that Portishead has seen in recent years. The Portishead Open Air Pool recently benefited from a £1.3 million makeover. The much-loved community lido has welcomed swimmers outdoors since the 1960s and was way overdue for some much-needed TLC.
The spruce has seen it add new changing rooms, more showers, and a whole new refurbished cafe selling all sorts of sweet treats, hot drinks and sandwiches. Now, not only have they remodeled the town’s original outdoor swimming pool, but they’re reviving the railway line, giving Portishead a whole new lease of life.
It may be time to add the idyllic town to your list of ones to watch as you curate your travel bucket list over the coming years.
