Why is West Mersey Beach popular?
West Mersey is a small coastal town on the Isle of Mersey, Essex, about 16 kilometers south of Colchester. The sandy and pebbly coastline here is very popular among tourists. During the summer season, a large number of people come here to enjoy the beach. However, sea level can change rapidly during high tide, sometimes posing a danger to swimmers and tourists. According to the Meteorological Department, high tide was expected to arrive at around 6:47 pm on the day of the incident. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether the accident was directly related to the tide or not.
Concern increased again regarding maritime security
After this incident, concern regarding maritime security has once again increased. Marine rescue agency RNLI has been continuously appealing to the people to get information about tides and follow safety rules before entering the sea.
Experts say that water depth and currents can change suddenly in coastal areas. Therefore, it is important to be extra cautious while swimming or other water activities. The RNLI also advises people that if someone becomes trapped in the water, instead of panicking, try to swim on their back, control their breathing and remain calm until help arrives.
