America imposed new tariffs on India. It is known that the new tariff will be effective from Friday. The Donald Trump administration has imposed new taxes on a total of 60 countries including Pakistan, China, Bangladesh. Although India was initially supposed to be taxed at 12.5 percent. But with New Delhi’s efforts, that tariff rate has finally been reduced somewhat.
Representative Jamie Greer said on Thursday that the new tariffs were imposed in accordance with Section 301 of the US Trade Act. These new tariffs are being imposed on countries that have failed to enact appropriate laws to prevent the production of products through forced labour. The Trump administration brought this proposal two weeks ago. It was then that a message was given by New Delhi not to take any decision unilaterally. America has been told that the US administration should negotiate with India on the tariff issue. There has been some positive response to that discussion. Not 12.5, 10 percent tax will be levied on Indian goods from now.
America has decided to impose new tariffs on 60 countries accused of not taking measures against forced labor. This list includes countries like China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Switzerland along with India. The US Department of Commerce has proposed imposing a 12.5 percent tariff on all these countries. In addition, an additional 10 percent tariff has been proposed on Britain, Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan. Finally, 17 countries face a 10 percent tariff, including India.
On the other hand, the idea of imposing a separate 100 percent tariff on Indian goods is also going on within the US administration. America has recently started a new legal process. The law is meant to impose huge tariffs on countries that still import energy from Russia. India has long been a major buyer of Russian oil. As a result, if the new law is passed, there is ample reason for India’s headache to increase.
