Germany have appointed Jürgen Klopp as their new head coach following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, the German Football Association (DFB) have confirmed.
The 59-year-old has signed an initial four-year contract, beginning on 15 August 2026 and running through to 2030, taking over following Germany’s shock round of 32 exit to Paraguay at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and Nagelsmann’s subsequent departure.
“The national team can unite us Germans better than anything else. That’s what makes this role so special for me,” said Klopp, who stepped down as Liverpool coach in May 2024 before joining Red Bull GmbH as Head of Global Soccer in January 2025.
“I’m grateful for everything I got to experience and learn over the last 18 months with Red Bull. Now I’m excited for this special role in Germany football, which we’ll approach with humility and patience, developing a team that fights for each other, enjoys playing football and that the people in our country can fully get behind.”
Klopp takes charge of a national team for the first time after winning virtually every major honour in club football.
He first made his name at Mainz, guiding the club to a maiden promotion to the Bundesliga in 2004 before establishing them in the top flight and leaving in 2008.

Klopp then restored Borussia Dortmund to the summit of German football, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, lifting the DFB Cup in 2012 and reaching the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League final.

After taking charge of Liverpool in October 2015, he led the club to Champions League glory in 2019 before ending its 30-year wait for a league title by winning the Premier League the following season.
His final major success at Anfield came in 2021/22, when Liverpool won both domestic cups and finished one point behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in one of the closest Premier League title races in history.
After leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, Klopp took a break from management before becoming Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer on 1 January 2025, overseeing the company’s international network of clubs, including Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

He takes over a Germany side still searching for its first major trophy since winning the 2014 World Cup, having suffered early exits at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said of the appointment: “Jürgen Klopp, like few others, embodies passion, credibility and the ability to inspire people. He was our first choice for the role. That’s why we made every effort to secure his services.”
DFB sporting director Rudi Völler added: “Over many years at the very highest level, Jürgen has proven that he can develop young players and get his teams to perform under pressure. He is also a brilliant motivator who will inspire our fans and German football as a whole.”
Klopp’s first match in charge will be against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on 24 September.
