Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigned: Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has resigned from his post. After the resignation, he said that he has been suffering from health related problems for a long time and that is why he has decided to step down. Talking to The Daily Star, he said that I am facing many health related problems. Right now I don’t have anything more to say. According to media reports, representatives from Rashtrapati Bhavan (Bang Bhavan) have left for Parliament with his resignation letter.

Shahabuddin was considered close to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He was sworn in as the 22nd President of the country on 24 April 2023. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the then Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chaudhary. He was the Awami League candidate and was elected President unopposed on 13 February 2023, as no other candidate filed nomination against him. His tenure was for 5 years, but he resigned two years before the end of his tenure.

Accused of contacting Sheikh Hasina

‘The Daily Star’ Quoting sources, the news agency said that the news of Mohammad Shahabuddin’s resignation has come at a time when it was reported that while going to London for treatment in May this year, he had talked to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on phone.

According to the report, later intelligence agencies got information about this conversation, after which the President was asked to resign. However, a senior leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) says that this phone call was not the only reason for resignation. According to him, the whole matter is much more complex than this. There was a continuous political debate in the country regarding Shahabuddin’s continuation in the post of President after Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government was ousted from power during the July 2024 protests.

Action being taken against Awami League leaders

This development has come to light amid the rapidly changing political situation of Bangladesh, at a time when the BNP-led government is intensifying action against leaders associated with the Awami League. This development comes after Shahabuddin’s recent claims in which he said that there were attempts to remove him from the post of President during the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh’s Bengali newspaper ‘Kaler Kantho’ In an interview given at Bangabhavan, the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Dhaka, Shahabuddin had said that during the interim government that lasted for one and a half years, he was not included in any important discussion. He alleged that conspiracies were hatched against him, attempts were made to remove him from the post and an attempt was made to create a constitutional crisis by creating instability in the country.
