Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigns, leaves post before completion of term
Dhaka. Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned from the post on Friday, almost two years before the end of his term. 76-year-old Shahabuddin has cited health related problems as the reason for his resignation.
According to the report of ‘The Daily Star’, when the President was asked about the reasons for his resignation, he said that he was suffering from many health related problems. Rashtrapati Bhavan ‘Bangabhavan’ spokesperson said that Shahabuddin’s representative has left for Parliament with his resignation letter. This resignation will be submitted to Parliament Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed.
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker of Parliament will hold the responsibility as acting President until a new President is elected. However, a Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said no official comment could be made on the matter until the Speaker of Parliament formally receives his resignation.
Took over the presidency in 2023
Mohammad Shahabuddin was sworn in as the President of Bangladesh for a five-year term in April 2023. Before this, he had been a lower court judge and had also played a role in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Shahabuddin was elected by the then Parliament to the highest constitutional post of the country. He was among the prominent constitutional functionaries who remained in office even after the student protests and political turmoil in July–August 2024.
After these protests, the Awami League government of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power. After this Sheikh Hasina went to India and is living there since August 5, 2024. Now after the resignation of the President, another big change has been seen in the politics of Bangladesh.
