23 year old Punjabi daughter brutally strangled to death in Canada, partner from Delhi arrested

Edmonton. A very sensational case has come to light from the City of Edmonton located in the Alberta province of Canada. Here, 23-year-old Indian student ‘Damanpreet Kaur’, a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, was strangled to death by her live-in partner. Canadian police took immediate action and arrested the deceased’s 22-year-old partner ‘Ritesh Kumar’ and registered a case of second-degree murder against him.

Died in hospital, revealed in post mortem

According to the Edmonton Police Service, on the evening of July 9 this month, police received an emergency call from a home in the Silverberry area. After that, the police reached the spot and found Damanpreet unconscious in a critical condition. He was immediately admitted to the hospital, where he died on July 12 after battling for life for three days. Then, in the post mortem report conducted on July 14, it was confirmed that Damanpreet died due to strangulation, after which the police declared it a murder.

Domestic violence and interpersonal relationships

Let us tell you that after a thorough investigation, the police arrested the accused ‘Ritesh Kumar’ on July 22, 2026, who is originally a resident of Delhi. Police spokesperson told the media that this case is related to domestic violence and mutual relationship. According to the police, both knew each other since 2021 and were living in a live-in relationship.

Mourning in Samrala due to death of only daughter

Let us tell you that the deceased ‘Damanpreet Kaur’ was a resident of village Lal Kalan located near Samrala in Ludhiana district of Punjab. She came to Canada about 5 years ago on student visa with dreams of a bright future. Damanpreet was the only child of her parents. Her father, who serves as a granthi/pathi in the local gurudwara, had sent his daughter abroad for studies by selling his land and taking huge loans. After this sad news, there is mourning in the entire village.

Social efforts continue to bring the mortal remains to India

The parents of the deceased are very poor and they do not have enough money to send the body to India. According to Canadian regulations, the cost of international body transportation (International Repatriation) is quite high. Due to which a GoFundMe campaign has been started in the Indian community and social media in Canada. Through this, efforts are being made to collect funds and send the mortal remains of ‘Damanpreet’ to his native village in Punjab for the last rites.
