‘Digital Arrest’: DRI caught two smuggling gangs, gold worth Rs 23.63 crore seized!

In Mumbai, cyber thugs threatened a 73-year-old tour and travel businessman in the name of digital arrest so much that he lost Rs 7.9 crore within 14 days. Mumbai’s West Cyber Police is now investigating the cyber fraud committed by this Andheri resident businessman.

According to the complaint, on July 5, the businessman received a call on WhatsApp. The caller introduced himself as a Delhi Police officer and said that his name has surfaced in a money laundering case involving Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal. The caller had a picture of Delhi Police on his WhatsApp profile, which led the businessman to trust him.

After this the thugs scared them by saying that the matter is related to national security, so do not inform anyone about it. He was interrogated through video call for several days. A person (who identified himself as Rahul Gupta) claimed that an account has been opened in a government bank using the businessman’s Aadhar card, in which Rs 7 crore is deposited. He also threatened to arrest soon.

The swindlers kept the businessman in an atmosphere of fear and constantly pressurized him to transfer the money. He also sent fake documents in the name of Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Supreme Court.

At the same time, a woman identifying herself as Delhi Cyber Police officer Nisha Gupta said that as per the court order, for investigation, businessmen should transfer the amount of all their mutual funds, fixed deposits and bank accounts to the mentioned personal bank accounts. To prove this claim true, a fake Supreme Court order was also sent.

Due to constant pressure and fear, the businessman sent a total of Rs 7.9 crore in six separate transactions between July 7 and July 16 to the personal bank accounts specified by the fraudsters.

This entire fraud came to light when West Cyber Police officials reached his house on July 18 and told him that he had become a victim of cyber fraud. After this, based on the intelligence received from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, West Cyber Police registered an FIR on July 21 and started investigation. Police have also started the process of getting back the defrauded amount of Rs 7.9 crore.

Mumbai Police said that the matter is being thoroughly investigated. Based on the information received from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, an FIR has been registered and the process of recovering the defrauded amount of Rs 7.9 crore has been started.
