Jana Nayagan crosses Rs 100 crore despite Day 2 drop
Chennai: Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark at the worldwide box office within just two days of its release. However, after a strong opening, the political action drama witnessed a sharp decline in collections on its second day, reflecting the impact of mixed audience and critical reactions.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the film opened to impressive numbers on Day 1, driven by Vijay’s massive fan base and the excitement surrounding what has been billed as his last film before focusing on politics. While the opening was robust, the second-day collections dropped significantly, although the film continued to maintain a strong overall worldwide total.
Day 2 collections see a sharp decline
According to industry estimates, Jana Nayagan earned Rs 21.15 crore net in India on its second day, marking a decline of over 50 per cent compared to its opening-day collection of Rs 42.70 crore. Despite the drop, the film’s total India net collection after two days stood at Rs 63.85 crore.
Worldwide, the film has grossed approximately Rs 112 crore to Rs 112.5 crore in two days, comfortably crossing the coveted Rs 100 crore milestone. Tamil Nadu remains the biggest contributor to the film’s earnings, with strong support also coming from overseas markets.
Mixed reviews affect momentum
The sharp decline comes after Jana Nayagan received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
While Vijay’s screen presence, emotional moments and Anirudh Ravichander’s background score have earned praise, many viewers criticised the screenplay, lengthy runtime and Bobby Deol’s antagonist. Social media reactions have remained divided, with some fans calling it a fitting farewell, while others described it as an underwhelming final outing for the actor.
Trade analysts note that a sizeable drop on the second day is not unusual for highly anticipated films that open on exceptionally strong numbers. The weekend collections will now determine whether the film can regain momentum.
Strong overseas performance
Despite the dip in domestic collections, Jana Nayagan has continued to perform well in international markets.
The film enjoyed strong openings in countries with large Tamil-speaking audiences, helping it surpass the Rs 100 crore worldwide milestone within 48 hours. Overseas collections are expected to remain healthy over the weekend as advance bookings continue in several territories.
Vijay’s farewell film remains in focus
Jana Nayagan carries added significance as it is widely expected to be Vijay’s final film before dedicating himself fully to politics.
The emotional connection between the actor and his fans has contributed significantly to the film’s theatrical performance. The cast also includes Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj and Priyamani in key roles, while the music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
Weekend performance will be crucial
The film now enters a crucial weekend phase, with exhibitors hoping positive word-of-mouth among Vijay’s fans will help stabilise collections.
Although the second-day decline has raised concerns, crossing Rs 100 crore globally within two days underlines the star power of Vijay and the massive anticipation surrounding his final cinematic outing.
Conclusion
Jana Nayagan has achieved a significant commercial milestone by surpassing Rs 100 crore worldwide in just two days. However, the steep drop in Day 2 collections suggests that sustaining momentum over the weekend will be critical in determining the long-term box office success of Vijay’s farewell film.
