New Delhi. President Draupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan with immediate effect. With this, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi has been given the additional charge of the Education Ministry in addition to his existing ministries. This decision has been taken at a time when the students’ agitation across the country regarding NEET-UG paper leak and other examination irregularities has become a major topic of political and social debate.

In a release issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, it was said that on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation has been accepted under Article 75(2) of the Constitution. Also, on the advice of the Prime Minister, Prahlad Joshi, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy in the Union Cabinet, has been given additional charge of the Education Ministry.

Dharmendra Pradhan had made public the information about submitting his resignation to the Prime Minister on Saturday. In a letter shared on the social media platform ‘X’, he said that he has taken this decision in the interest of the students, their future and to maintain normalcy in the country. He said he decided to step down so that students could focus on their studies and careers instead of getting embroiled in legal disputes.

63-year-old Prahlad Venkatesh Joshi is currently holding the responsibility of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy. Joshi, who has been elected Lok Sabha member from Dharwad in Karnataka for five consecutive terms, comes from the background of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is counted among the senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he again made a place as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi government. On receiving the additional charge of the Education Ministry, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said, “…I accept this responsibility with dutifulness and humility. I am grateful to the Prime Minister. Many historic achievements have been made in the last 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
