Violence during CJP protest in Kolkata, Goonda Suppression Act implemented for the first time

Kolkata, 25 July 2026: The Bengal government has taken a strict stance regarding the violence and attacks on police and journalists during the protest organized by various leftist student organizations including SFI in support of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) movement at Kolkata’s Dharmatala on Friday.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had said in the Assembly on Saturday that so far 70 people have been identified in connection with this violence and seven cases have been registered.

The Chief Minister had told the House that the ‘Anti-Goonda’ law recently passed by the State Assembly has been implemented in these cases also; This is the first implementation of this law. He had clearly stated that strict action will be taken against those who violate law and order and the culprits will be given such punishment that will be remembered for three generations.

The Chief Minister had also informed the House that none of the 70 persons found to be indulging in violence under the guise of protests were students, nor were they members of the self-proclaimed ‘Cockroach Janata Party’. The Chief Minister had also revealed the names of four notorious goons from Muslim-dominated areas of Kolkata who were involved in the violence and assured to take the strictest possible action against them.

Strongly condemned the attack on journalists

The Chief Minister had strongly condemned the attack on journalists during the protest. He said that, on Friday evening, he himself visited SSKM Hospital and visited the injured journalists and gave instructions for their proper treatment. He further said that repeated attempts were made to provoke the police, but the police had maintained restraint and did not indulge in any provocation.

The Chief Minister had said that the government has already given clear instructions to the police not to use unnecessary force during the protests suppressing democracy. The police will have to maintain restraint until the protesters go completely out of control.
