BNP MP Nasir Uddin Chowdhury has demanded a merger of his party with Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. This claim has created a sensation in political circles across the country.
The BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, has long sought Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India. However, her own party MP, Nasir Chowdhury, has labeled the Awami League an ally and advocated for a merger, a move that contradicts the BNP leadership’s stance, deepening divisions within the party.

BNP MP Nasir Chowdhury made this controversial statement at a rally in the Sunamganj-2 constituency. He said at the rally at Thana Point that the Awami League is not our enemy, but an ally. This comment has sparked a new controversy in the country’s politics.
Chowdhury stated that Awami League leaders had participated in the 1971 Liberation War alongside the BNP. He claimed that the Awami League would soon fully merge with his party. However, the BNP’s top leadership has completely rejected this statement.
Sheikh Hasina’s address from Delhi
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina revealed her future plans during a press conference held in Delhi. Addressing the media for the first time in two years, Hasina said she plans to return to Bangladesh in December this year, which will coincide with the anniversary of the 1971 Liberation War.
Hasina said that Bangladesh gained independence in 1971 after the crushing defeat of the Pakistani army following Indian military intervention. It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina’s government was ousted from power following violent student protests in July and August 2024, forcing her to return to India.
Political crisis and sharp reaction
The Bangladesh government has also reacted sharply and severely to MP Chowdhury’s statement. A senior advisor to the Prime Minister stated that Sheikh Hasina’s press conference and the BNP MP’s statement were a blatant insult to the martyrs of the July uprising.
The BNP government has long demanded that New Delhi extradite “fugitive Sheikh Hasina” and deny her a political platform. The MP’s controversial remarks highlight the starkly contrasting stances of Tarique Rahman’s government and the BNP leadership.
