Ottawa, July 25, 2026: A 23-year-old Indian woman of Punjabi origin was strangled to death in Edmonton, Canada. The police have arrested his associate in connection with this murder. The deceased woman has been identified as Damanpreet Kaur.
Damanpreet was a resident of Samrala, Ludhiana, Punjab.
According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), on July 9, 2026, at approximately 6:44 pm, they received a call from a home in the Silverberry area. An unconscious woman was found there with signs of injury. The police immediately took a 22-year-old man into custody from the spot.
The injured woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition. After three days of treatment, Damanpreet died on 12 July. On July 14, an autopsy conducted by the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office declared the death a homicide. The report confirmed that Damanpreet’s death was due to strangulation.
On July 22, police arrested Damanpreet’s associate Ritesh Kumar and charged him with ‘second-degree murder’ (intentional murder). Police had said that this is a case of murder of a close associate and at present no other suspect is being searched.
Damanpreet’s family has started a ‘GoFundMe’ campaign to bring her mortal remains back to India for her last rites. It has been stated in this appeal that in these difficult times, the cost of international transportation, documentation and funeral is very high.
