Questioning the alleged use of pellet guns on students, the Congress MP claimed that a 19-year-old student is in great pain and may lose vision in one eye as he was shot with a pellet gun. Rahul Gandhi said in a letter to Amit Shah, ‘The security forces deployed in Delhi are ultimately answerable to you, so I ask –
- As Home Minister, did you approve the use of lethal force, including pellet guns, against students? If not then who gave it?
- Are the people seen in plain clothes beating students with sticks, are they policemen or volunteers? Who gave permission for his deployment?
‘It is the government’s responsibility to protect the protesters’
The Congress leader further said that it is the responsibility of the government to protect the protesters and resolve their grievances through talks. Rahul wrote, ‘Peaceful protest is very important for any democracy. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the protesters and resolve their grievances through dialogue. This kind of barbaric violence breaks every rule and has outraged the nation. Youth and students, considered the future of the country, are demanding answers and accountability. Their voices will be heard.
Earlier on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi had strongly criticized the government, saying that children protesting for their rights get pellets instead of justice. In a post on Twitter, Rahul Gandhi shared a video of a youth who was allegedly beaten by Delhi Police during the protest against the paper leak on Monday.
‘The police took up the gun and badly injured the student’
The post read, ‘Sahil was standing with the tricolor in his hand and was just asking for a clean, fair examination and the fruits of his hard work, when the police raised their gun and fired pellets, injuring him badly. This is not a British oppression. This is the barbarity of the Modi government in independent India, where innocent students demanding their rights get pallets instead of justice.
Many policemen also injured in student movement
It is noteworthy that more than 118 policemen were also injured in the said incident, which includes senior officers like Special Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner of Police, Additional Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police and Assistant Commissioner of Police and many women policemen. During the melee, around 60 protesters were also reported injured.
