India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is the biggest example of this. The journey started from poverty and struggle
Born in 1994 in Nongpok Kakching, a small village in Imphal East district of Manipur, Mirabai is the youngest of six siblings. His father was a construction worker in the Public Works Department, while his mother supported the family by running a small tea and samosa shop in the village. The financial crunch in the family of eight was so severe that sometimes it became difficult to even get two meals a day. Despite this, Mirabai never compromised with her dreams.
Sometimes training on an empty stomach
A sport like weightlifting requires nutritious food and protein, but due to financial constraints, many times Mirabai did not even have enough food. It is said that he practiced for many days by drinking only water, but never gave up.
Reached training center by trucks
When iron barbells were not available for practice, he started practicing by making barbells from bamboo stems. The distance from his village to Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal was about 20-40 kilometers. When there was no bus fare, she often took lifts from trucks carrying sand to reach training. After winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, he also honored the truck drivers who had helped him during his days of struggle.
