CWG 2026: Mirabai Chanu’s golden wonder, brought pride to India with historic victory

New Delhi: India’s star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu once again raised the tricolor high at the Commonwealth Games 2026. She won the gold medal with a strong performance in the women’s 48 kg category. With this, Mirabai also completed the golden hat-trick by winning gold in CWG for the third consecutive time.

Made a new record by lifting 85KG

This time Mirabai not only won but also created history. He created a new Commonwealth record by lifting 85 kg. This is the highest weight lifted by any female lifter in the history of CWG till date.

Interestingly, Mirabai broke the record twice in a single day. In his first attempt he broke the old CWG record by lifting 82 kg. Then in the third attempt he set a new benchmark by lifting 85 kg very easily.

Sports experts say that this record is not limited to Commonwealth Games only. This is one of the biggest records made by a player from any Commonwealth country in a major international competition like the World Championship or the Olympics.

Shock in the beginning, then a great comeback

Mirabai’s beginning was not easy. In her first attempt of 82 kg, she was able to lift the weight above her head, but in the last attempt she lost her balance and had to drop the barbell down. Despite being a two-time CWG Champion, the initial failure definitely created some pressure.

But Mirabai did not lose her composure. He showed tremendous form in the next two attempts. After 82KG jumped straight to 85KG and completed it with confidence. When the tricolor was hoisted in the entire stadium and the national anthem was played, every Indian’s eyes were moist.

Third consecutive gold, named Golden Hattrick

After 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham, Mirabai completed the hat-trick by winning gold in 2026 also. She has become the first female weightlifter from India to win gold three times in a row in CWG. Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu has already brought medals for the country many times.

But, his third consecutive win in CWG gives him a different identity. The way he has bounced back despite injuries and setbacks is an inspiration for young players. India’s medal tally has also got a big boost with this victory of Mirabai.

India’s dominance in the 48KG category was proved once again. After the match, Mirabai said that this victory is dedicated to all those who supported her in difficult times. He further talked about continuing preparations for the Olympics and World Championship.
