New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has praised Pakistani singer Shamoon Ismail’s music.
Speaking to Rolling Stone in an interview published on Wednesday, July 22, the 34-year-old politician revealed he has been listening to Ismail, Radio & Weasel, and Kacey Musgraves when asked which artists have been on his playlist lately.
“Right now, I’ve been listening to a lot of Radio & Weasel, who are a duo from Uganda who were running the charts for a long, long time,” Mamdani said.
He added, “I’ve also been listening to a Pakistani rapper named Shamoon Ismail, who I’ve listened to for a few years. If I’m feeling reflective, throw on some Kacey Musgraves.”
Although he didn’t reveal which of Ismail’s songs he’s been listening to, Mamdani’s praise reflects his multicultural upbringing and close connection to the South Asian community.
This is not the first time the mayor has publicly embraced South Asian music. After delivering his victory speech following his win in the 2025 New York City mayoral election, he famously walked off the stage to Dhoom Machale.
Meanwhile, Ismail continues to captivate fans with his soulful music, with tracks including Rung, Decision, Cold World, Dance, On & On, Don’t Careand VOLUME garnering thousands of streams.
